With more rain on the way, September 2026 is shaping up as one of the wettest months Iowa has ever recorded.

As of September 24, the month ranked as the fifth-wettest September on record statewide, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The state has already recorded six inches of rain for the month, outpacing its typical September average of 3.5 inches of rain.

Forecaster expect more rain, with totals across the state possibly reaching at least 1.5 inches over the next seven days. The timing is a concern for farmers looking to harvest. Wet and soggy fields keep combines out.
